Clobetasol Propionate 0.05%w/w & Salicylic Acid 3.50%w/w Ointment IPClobetasol Propionate 0.05%w/w & Salicylic Acid 3.50%w/w Ointment IP

Product Description

Clobetasol Propionate 0.05% w/w & Salicylic Acid 3.50% w/w Ointment IP is a super-potent topical corticosteroid combined with a keratolytic agent, used to treat inflammatory and hyperkeratotic skin conditions such as eczema (atopic dermatitis) and psoriasis.

Eczema involves inflamed, itchy, cracked, and rough skin patches, sometimes with blisters from friction or irritation.

Psoriasis is an autoimmune disorder where skin cells proliferate rapidly (up to 10 times normal), forming thick, scaly, red plaques commonly on the scalp, elbows, knees, and lower back.

The ointment reduces inflammation, itching, and scaling while promoting desquamation of thickened skin. It is for short-term use only (≤2 weeks) due to the high potency of clobetasol, which can cause skin thinning or systemic absorption if overused. Not for facial/genital use or broken skin without advice.

Avoid if you have active bacterial, fungal, or viral skin infections, acne vulgaris, rosacea, or perioral dermatitis.

Uses

Clobetasol Propionate & Salicylic Acid Ointment IP is indicated for:

  • Inflammatory and pruritic manifestations of moderate to severe eczema (atopic dermatitis) or psoriasis vulgaris (plaque type)

  • Other corticosteroid-responsive dermatoses with hyperkeratosis (e.g., lichen planus, discoid lupus erythematosus), where scaling hinders penetration

Apply sparingly; not for long-term maintenance or widespread use. Discontinue if no improvement after 1–2 weeks and consult a doctor.

How it works

Clobetasol Propionate 0.05% w/w & Salicylic Acid 3.50% w/w Ointment combines a potent glucocorticoid and a beta-hydroxy acid:

  • Clobetasol Propionate (0.05% w/w): A synthetic corticosteroid that binds to intracellular glucocorticoid receptors, inhibiting phospholipase A2 and reducing arachidonic acid release. This decreases the production of inflammatory mediators like prostaglandins, leukotrienes, and cytokines, thereby alleviating redness, swelling, itching, and erythema.

  • Salicylic Acid (3.50% w/w): A keratolytic agent that softens and desquamates the stratum corneum (horny layer) by dissolving intercellular cement, breaking down keratin clumps, and removing dead skin cells. It enhances clobetasol's penetration into hyperkeratotic lesions and provides mild antiseptic effects.

Together, they provide synergistic relief: salicylic acid clears scales for better steroid access, while clobetasol controls underlying inflammation.

Benefits

Clobetasol Propionate & Salicylic Acid Ointment offers rapid symptom relief (within 3–7 days) in eczema and psoriasis by reducing inflammation, itching, redness, and scaling, leading to smoother, less irritated skin. The keratolytic action helps debride plaques, improving cosmetic appearance and comfort, especially in thick psoriatic lesions. It enhances quality of life by minimizing scratching and secondary infections, but benefits are maximized with short-term use alongside emollients or phototherapy. Unlike systemic steroids, it targets localized areas with a lower overall risk when used correctly.

How to use

Clobetasol propionate and salicylic acid ointment should be used at the dose and duration as advised by the doctor. It is advised to check the label for directions before use. It is for external use only. Make sure to wash your hands before and after using this medicine. Apply it in sufficient quantity to cover the affected area.

Side Effects

Most side effects are local and dose-dependent, resolving upon discontinuation. Common side effects (affecting 1–10% of patients) include:

  • Burning, itching, irritation, or redness at the application site

  • Peeling or dryness of the skin

  • Folliculitis (hair follicle inflammation) or acne-like eruptions

Safety Advice

  • Alcohol: No known interaction, as this is a topical ointment with minimal systemic absorption.

  • Pregnancy: Category C (animal studies show fetal risks like cleft palate; limited human data—low risk with limited use, but avoid large areas/long-term due to potential placental transfer). Use only if benefits outweigh risks (e.g., severe uncontrolled eczema); consult your doctor for safer alternatives like emollients.

  • Breastfeeding: Minimal excretion in milk with topical use; safe if applied away from breasts/nipples and washed off before feeding. Avoid treating large areas; monitor infants for skin irritation.

  • Driving/Operating Machinery: No effects, as it is topical and non-sedating.

Storage Conditions

  • Store at a temperature below 30°C (86°F), in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, heat, and excessive moisture.
