Product Description
Esomeprazole Tablets IP 40 mg belong to the proton pump inhibitor (PPI) class of medications. They are primarily used to treat and manage conditions caused by excessive stomach acid production. These include duodenal and gastric ulcers, erosive esophagitis, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), Zollinger-Ellison syndrome (a rare condition causing excessive acid production), and other acid-related disorders. The "IP" indicates that the product meets Indian Pharmacopoeia standards.
Esomeprazole is formulated with a gastro-resistant coating to prevent degradation in the acidic stomach environment, allowing absorption in the small intestine.
It irreversibly inhibits the H+/K+ ATPase enzyme (proton pump) in gastric parietal cells, blocking the final step of acid secretion and thereby reducing both basal and stimulated acid production.
Uses
-
Treatment and maintenance of erosive esophagitis caused by GERD
-
Management of symptomatic GERD
-
Healing and prevention of gastric and duodenal ulcers
-
Eradication of Helicobacter pylori infection in combination with antibiotics
-
Treatment of Zollinger-Ellison syndrome and other pathological hypersecretory conditions
-
Prevention of acid-related damage in patients on long-term NSAIDs
How it works
Esomeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor that selectively and irreversibly blocks the H+/K+ ATPase enzyme in the gastric parietal cells. This enzyme is responsible for the secretion of hydrochloric acid into the stomach. By inhibiting this enzyme, esomeprazole significantly reduces gastric acid secretion, allowing healing of acid-related damage and relief from symptoms such as heartburn and acid regurgitation. The drug is absorbed in the small intestine after passing through the stomach intact due to its enteric coating.
Benefits
-
Provides a potent and sustained reduction of gastric acid secretion
-
Promotes healing of erosive esophagitis and peptic ulcers
-
Reduces symptoms of GERD such as heartburn and acid reflux
-
Helps prevent recurrence of ulcers and acid-related damage
-
Improves the quality of life in patients with acid-related gastrointestinal disorders
How to use
-
Swallow the tablet whole with water, preferably on an empty stomach at least one hour before the first meal of the day for optimal absorption and efficacy.
-
Do not crush, chew, or break the tablet as it has a special gastro-resistant coating.
-
If prescribed with antibiotics (e.g., amoxicillin, clarithromycin) for H. pylori eradication, take them together as directed. For other medications, such as antacids, consult your doctor or pharmacist about timing to avoid interactions.
-
Follow your doctor’s instructions regarding the duration of therapy. Long-term use requires monitoring of magnesium and vitamin B12 levels.
-
Inform your doctor if symptoms persist beyond 2–4 weeks or worsen.

Safety Advice
-
Inform your doctor if you have severe liver disease, low magnesium or vitamin B12 levels, osteoporosis, or a history of lupus.
-
Disclose all medications, including over-the-counter drugs and herbal supplements (e.g., St. John’s wort), to avoid interactions.

FAQs
Is Esomeprazole an antacid?
Esomeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI), not a typical antacid. While antacids neutralise existing stomach acid for quick, short-term relief, esomeprazole reduces the amount of acid the stomach produces over a longer period.
When is the best time to take Esomeprazole 40 mg?
For optimal results, it is generally recommended to take Esomeprazole at least one hour before your first meal of the day, on an empty stomach.
How long does it take for Esomeprazole to work?
You may begin to feel better within 2 to 3 days, but it can take up to 4 weeks for the medication to work fully. If you don't see improvement after 2 weeks, consult your doctor.
Is it safe to take Esomeprazole during pregnancy?
If pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, consult your doctor before taking esomeprazole. Your doctor will assess the potential benefits and risks.
Can alcohol be consumed with Esomeprazole?
While alcohol does not directly interfere with esomeprazole, it can increase stomach acid production and worsen symptoms. It is best to limit or avoid alcohol consumption while on this medication.
