Febuxostat Tablets 40mg IPFebuxostat Tablets 40mg IPFebuxostat Tablets 40mg IP

Product Description

They are used to manage chronic hyperuricemia (elevated uric acid levels ≥6 mg/dL) in patients with gout, a form of inflammatory arthritis caused by the deposition of monosodium urate crystals in joints.

Gout leads to sudden, severe attacks of pain, swelling, redness, and tenderness, often in the big toe but affecting other joints.

Febuxostat lowers uric acid production to prevent gout flares, reduce tophi (crystal deposits), and decrease joint damage over time. It is not used to treat acute gout attacks (use NSAIDs/colchicine for flares) and is typically initiated after prophylaxis to avoid initial flare-ups. Avoid it if you have ischemic heart disease, severe renal/hepatic impairment, or hypersensitivity. Baseline LFTs and uric acid levels are recommended before starting.

Uses

Chronic management of hyperuricemia in gout patients to prevent gouty arthritis flares and reduce the frequency/severity of attacks

  • Long-term control of uric acid levels to dissolve urate crystals, prevent tophi formation, and protect joints from erosion

How it works

Febuxostat 40 mg Tablets contain febuxostat, a selective inhibitor of xanthine oxidase—an enzyme essential for converting purines to uric acid.

By non-competitively blocking this enzyme, febuxostat reduces uric acid production in the body, lowering serum levels and preventing the formation of urate crystals in joints and tissues.

This decreases inflammation, pain, swelling, and the risk of recurrent gout flares. Unlike allopurinol, it is not a purine analog, making it suitable for patients intolerant to allopurinol.

Benefits

Febuxostat 40 mg tablets effectively lower serum uric acid levels, thereby reducing inflammation caused by urate crystals in gout-affected joints. This prevents sudden gout attacks (flares), alleviates pain, swelling, and redness, and promotes long-term joint health by dissolving tophi and inhibiting disease progression. It is particularly beneficial for patients with frequent flares or allopurinol intolerance, offering once-daily dosing with sustained uric acid control (target <6 mg/dL), improving quality of life and reducing the need for acute treatments.

How to use

Swallow the tablet whole with water; it can be taken with or without food (food slightly delays absorption but not efficacy).

  • If a dose is missed, take it as soon as you remember, unless it is near the next scheduled dose—do not double up.

Side Effects

Most side effects are mild and transient. Common side effects (affecting 1–10% of patients) include:

  • Nausea

  • Rash (may be mild to severe)

  • Dizziness

  • Diarrhea

  • Joint pain or arthralgia (temporary worsening during initiation)

  • Edema (localized swelling from fluid retention)

  • Abnormal liver function tests (e.g., elevated ALT/AST)

Safety Advice

  • Alcohol: Avoid or limit alcohol, as it increases uric acid production and reduces febuxostat's effectiveness, potentially worsening gout or causing flares.

  • Pregnancy: Category C (limited human data; animal studies show no direct harm but potential fetal risks). Use only if benefits outweigh risks—consult your doctor; effective contraception advised.

  • Breastfeeding: Avoid, as febuxostat passes into breast milk and may harm the infant (e.g., rash, liver effects). Pump and discard milk during treatment.

  • Driving/Operating Machinery: May cause dizziness or drowsiness; avoid until you know its effects on you.

Storage Conditions

Store at a temperature below 30°C (86°F), in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, heat, and excessive moisture.
