Levocetrizine Tablets IP 5 mgLevocetrizine Tablets IP 5 mgLevocetrizine Tablets IP 5 mg

Product Description

Levocetirizine Dihydrochloride Tablets IP 5 mg belong to a class of drugs called second-generation antihistamines (anti-allergic agents). As the active R-enantiomer of cetirizine, levocetirizine is primarily used to treat various allergic conditions.

Allergies occur when the immune system overreacts to harmless foreign substances (allergens) like pollen, dust mites, pet dander, or certain foods, triggering symptoms such as sneezing, itching, or hives.

It provides relief without significant sedative effects compared to first-generation antihistamines, though mild drowsiness can occur in some individuals.

Uses

Levocetirizine Dihydrochloride 5 mg Tablets are indicated for the treatment of Seasonal allergic rhinitis (hay fever: symptoms like sneezing, runny/itchy nose, watery eyes due to pollen or dust), Perennial allergic rhinitis (year-round allergies to dust mites, pet dander, or mold), Chronic idiopathic urticaria (hives: red, itchy, raised skin patches),

Allergic conjunctivitis (itchy, red eyes), Atopic dermatitis (eczema) or other skin allergies, Reactions to insect bites/stings or mild food allergies (as adjunct therapy)

How it works

Levocetirizine Dihydrochloride 5 mg Tablets block the action of histamine, a chemical messenger released during allergic reactions. By selectively antagonizing peripheral H1-receptors on cells in the nose, eyes, skin, and airways, it prevents histamine from binding and causing symptoms like itching, swelling, sneezing, and a runny nose. It has minimal penetration into the central nervous system, reducing drowsiness compared to older antihistamines, but some sedation may still occur.

Benefits

Levocetirizine 5 mg tablets effectively relieve symptoms of hay fever (seasonal allergic rhinitis), year-round allergies (perennial allergic rhinitis), and urticaria in adults and children aged ≥2 years (adjusted dosing). It quickly (within 1 hour) reduces discomfort from blocked/runny/itchy nose, red/watery eyes, sneezing, and skin rashes, improving daily functioning and sleep quality. Long-term use (up to 6 months) is safe for chronic conditions when prescribed, with once-daily dosing for convenience.

How to use

Swallow it as a whole with water; do not crush, break or chew the tablet.

Side Effects

Most side effects are mild and transient. Common side effects (affecting 1–10% of patients) include:

  • Headache

  • Dry mouth

  • Nausea (feeling sick)

  • Tiredness or fatigue

  • Dizziness

  • Abdominal pain

Safety Advice

Avoid combining with alcohol, as it may enhance drowsiness and dizziness, impairing coordination. Pregnancy category B (no evidence of harm in animal studies; limited human data). Use only if clearly needed and prescribed by a doctor—benefits must outweigh potential risks to the fetus. In breastfeeding, small amounts pass into breast milk; use with caution or avoid, as it may cause drowsiness or irritability in infants. Consult a doctor for alternatives. May cause drowsiness or dizziness in some; avoid driving/operating machinery until you know its effects. It rarely causes blurry vision but can impair reaction times.

Storage Conditions

Store at a temperature below 86°F (30 °C). Protect from light and moisture.
