Amlodipine 5mg & Atenolol 50mg Tablets IPAmlodipine 5mg & Atenolol 50mg Tablets IPAmlodipine 5mg & Atenolol 50mg Tablets IP

Product Description

Amlodipine 5 mg & Atenolol 50 mg Tablets IP are a fixed-dose combination antihypertensive medication used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure). Hypertension is a chronic condition where the force of blood against artery walls is consistently elevated, increasing the risk of heart disease, stroke, kidney damage, and vascular complications.

This tablet contains two active ingredients:

  • Amlodipine (a dihydropyridine calcium channel blocker) relaxes and widens blood vessels by inhibiting calcium influx into vascular smooth muscle cells, reducing peripheral resistance and the heart's workload.

  • Atenolol (a selective beta-1 adrenergic blocker) blocks the effects of stress hormones like adrenaline and noradrenaline on the heart, slowing heart rate, reducing cardiac output, and lowering blood pressure.

Together, they provide complementary effects for better blood pressure control, reducing the risk of cardiovascular events like heart attack or stroke. Take as prescribed by your doctor, typically once daily, for the duration recommended based on your condition. Common side effects include nausea, drowsiness, ankle swelling (edema), headache, palpitations, low blood pressure (hypotension), cold extremities, flushing, slow heart rate (bradycardia), constipation, and fatigue. These usually resolve without intervention, but consult your doctor if persistent or severe.

Inform your doctor before use if you have allergies to any components, are pregnant/planning pregnancy (contraindicated in 2nd/3rd trimesters due to fetal risks; FDA category C for amlodipine, D for atenolol), breastfeeding (may pass into milk), or have liver/kidney disease, heart failure, heart block, bradycardia, severe aortic stenosis, or a history of stroke/heart attack. Regular blood pressure monitoring is essential, especially if on other antihypertensives. Do not stop abruptly, as it may cause rebound hypertension or angina. Stay hydrated, but limit fluids if you have kidney issues. Avoid if you have uncontrolled heart failure or certain conduction abnormalities.

Uses

  • Treatment of hypertension (high blood pressure), alone or in combination with other agents

  • May also be used for stable angina in patients with hypertension (off-label in some guidelines)

How it works

Amlodipine 5 mg & Atenolol 50 mg Tablets IP combine a calcium channel blocker (amlodipine) and a beta-blocker (atenolol). Amlodipine inhibits calcium entry into vascular smooth muscle and cardiac cells, leading to vasodilation (widening of blood vessels), reduced peripheral resistance, and decreased cardiac afterload. Atenolol selectively blocks beta-1 receptors in the heart, reducing heart rate, myocardial contractility, and renin release, which lowers cardiac output and blood pressure. This synergistic action effectively controls hypertension and reduces cardiovascular strain.

Benefits

  • Lowers high blood pressure more effectively than monotherapy, improving heart efficiency and reducing vessel strain

  • Decreases the risk of heart attack, stroke, heart failure, and kidney damage in hypertensive patients

  • Amlodipine provides smooth vasodilation with less reflex tachycardia, while atenolol controls heart rate for better overall hemodynamic stability

  • Suitable for patients with co-existing conditions like angina or post-heart attack, when tolerated

  • Long-acting formulation allows once-daily dosing for better adherence

How to use

Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water; do not crush, break, or chew it.

  • Take once daily, with or without food, preferably at the same time each day for consistent effects.

  • Follow your doctor's dosage instructions; do not adjust or stop without consultation to avoid rebound effects.

  • Combine with lifestyle measures like a low-sodium diet, regular exercise, weight management, and stress reduction.

Side Effects

Amlodipine with atenolol Side effects:

  • Nausea

  • Drowsiness or sleepiness

  • Ankle or peripheral swelling (edema, mainly from amlodipine)

  • Headache

  • Palpitations

  • Cold hands/feet (extremities)

  • Flushing (warmth in face, neck, or chest)

  • Slow heart rate (bradycardia)

  • Constipation

  • Fatigue or tiredness

Safety Advice

  • Avoid alcohol while taking Amlodipine 5 mg & Atenolol 50 mg Tablets IP, as it can exacerbate hypotension, dizziness, and drowsiness.

  • Contraindicated in pregnancy (especially 2nd/3rd trimesters) due to risks like fetal bradycardia, growth restriction, or low birth weight; use effective contraception if applicable. Not recommended during breastfeeding, as both drugs can pass into breast milk and affect the infant.

  • Use with caution in patients with liver impairment (amlodipine metabolism affected) or kidney disease (atenolol clearance reduced; dose adjustment needed). Monitor heart rate and blood pressure regularly.

  • Avoid abrupt discontinuation; taper gradually to prevent rebound hypertension, angina, or arrhythmias.

  • Inform your doctor of all medications (e.g., other antihypertensives, NSAIDs, or antidepressants) to avoid interactions like excessive bradycardia or reduced efficacy.

  • Do not drive or operate machinery if you experience dizziness or fatigue. Rise slowly from sitting/lying to prevent orthostatic hypotension.

Storage Conditions

  • Store at temperatures below 30°C (86°F).

FAQs

What are Amlodipine 5mg & Atenolol 50mg Tablets used for?

They are used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure) by lowering blood pressure and reducing the risk of heart attack or stroke.

How do Amlodipine 5mg & Atenolol 50mg Tablets work?

Amlodipine relaxes and widens blood vessels to reduce the heart's workload, while atenolol slows the heart rate by blocking stress hormones. Together, they lower blood pressure and improve circulation.

Can I stop taking Amlodipine 5mg & Atenolol 50mg Tablets when my blood pressure is under control?

No, do not stop without consulting your doctor. Monitor blood pressure for at least 2 weeks; sudden discontinuation can cause rebound high blood pressure, chest pain, or a heart attack. Your doctor may taper the dose gradually.

Can Amlodipine 5mg & Atenolol 50mg Tablets cause ankle swelling (edema)?

Yes, ankle swelling is a common side effect, primarily from amlodipine's vasodilatory action. Elevate your legs when sitting, reduce salt intake, and consult your doctor if it persists or worsens.

Can high blood pressure harm my baby in pregnancy?

Yes, pregnancy-induced hypertension (PIH) can harm both mother and baby, causing seizures (eclampsia), headaches, kidney damage, preterm birth, low birth weight, or stillbirth. Monitor blood pressure regularly and consult an obstetrician; avoid this medication in pregnancy.

What is Edema (fluid overload)?

Edema, or fluid retention, causes swelling in areas like the ankles or legs due to excess fluid buildup. It may result from the medication or underlying conditions. Elevate the affected area and consult your doctor if it doesn't subside, as it could indicate heart/kidney issues.
