Fenofibrate 200 mg Tablets IPFenofibrate 200 mg Tablets IPFenofibrate 200 mg Tablets IP

Product Description

Fenofibrate 200 mg Tablets IP is an oral hypolipidemic medication used to lower elevated levels of lipids (fats) in the blood, including cholesterol and triglycerides. It is primarily prescribed for hypertriglyceridemia and mixed dyslipidemia. Fenofibrate belongs to the fibrate class of drugs and works by activating peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha (PPAR-α), which increases the breakdown and removal of triglycerides and other fatty substances from the bloodstream. It is used as an adjunct to diet, exercise, and lifestyle modifications to improve lipid profiles and reduce the risk of cardiovascular events and pancreatitis caused by very high triglyceride levels.

Uses

  • Treatment of hypertriglyceridemia (high triglycerides)
  • Treatment of hypercholesterolemia (high cholesterol)
  • Management of mixed dyslipidemia (elevated LDL, triglycerides, and low HDL)
  • Adjunct therapy to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, such as heart attack and stroke
  • Prevention of pancreatitis associated with severe hypertriglyceridemia

How it works

  • Fenofibrate is converted in the body to its active form, fenofibric acid, which activates PPAR-α receptors. This activation:
  • Increases the activity of lipoprotein lipase, an enzyme that breaks down triglycerides in the blood.
  • Reduces the production of very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL), a precursor to LDL ("bad") cholesterol.
  • Enhances the clearance of triglyceride-rich particles from the bloodstream.
  • Increases high-density lipoprotein (HDL or "good" cholesterol) levels.
  • These effects collectively improve the lipid profile and reduce cardiovascular risk.

Benefits

  • Effectively lowers elevated triglycerides and LDL cholesterol.

  • Raises HDL cholesterol, improving overall lipid balance.

  • Reduces the risk of pancreatitis caused by very high triglyceride levels.

  • Helps prevent the buildup of fatty plaques in arteries, lowering the risk of heart attack and stroke.

  • Complements diet and lifestyle changes for comprehensive lipid management.

How to use

  • Take fenofibrate tablets once daily, preferably at the same time each day.

  • Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water, with or without food.

  • Do not crush, chew, or split the tablet.

  • Follow your doctor’s instructions regarding dosage and duration.

  • Regular blood tests are necessary to monitor lipid levels, liver, and kidney function during treatment.

Side Effects

  • Headache

  • Itching or mild skin rash

  • Respiratory symptoms such as a runny or stuffy nose, sneezing

  • Musculoskeletal pain, including back pain, joint pain, muscle aches

  • Gastrointestinal issues: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, abdominal pain

Safety Advice

  • Use fenofibrate exactly as prescribed and attend all scheduled medical monitoring appointments.

  • Inform your doctor immediately if you experience muscle pain, weakness, or dark urine.

  • Avoid excessive alcohol consumption to reduce risk of liver damage and pancreatitis.

  • Inform your doctor about all medications you take, especially blood thinners like warfarin, as fenofibrate can increase bleeding risk.

  • Fenofibrate is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding unless clearly needed and prescribed by a doctor.

  • Use caution if you have liver or kidney disease; dose adjustments may be necessary.

Storage Conditions

  • Store at a temperature below 30°C (86°F) in a cool, dry place.

FAQs

How is fenofibrate different from a statin?

Fenofibrate is a fibrate, while statins are a different class of medication. Fibrates primarily target high triglycerides, significantly reducing them and modestly increasing "good" HDL cholesterol. Statins, like atorvastatin and rosuvastatin, are generally more potent at lowering "bad" LDL cholesterol. Both are often used alongside a low-fat diet and exercise.

How long does it take to see results?

It may take several weeks for the effects of fenofibrate on your cholesterol and triglyceride levels to become apparent. Your doctor will typically check your lipid levels through a blood test after 4–8 weeks to assess the medication's effectiveness.

Can fenofibrate be taken with statins?

Yes, fenofibrate can be used with statins, especially for patients with high LDL cholesterol and high triglycerides. However, combining these drugs can increase the risk of muscle side effects and liver problems. Regular monitoring by a doctor is essential. Fenofibrate does not significantly increase the concentration of most statins in the blood, making it a safer option than other fibrates like gemfibrozil for combination therapy.

What should be avoided while taking fenofibrate?

Alcohol: Excessive alcohol consumption should be avoided, as it can increase the risk of liver damage and pancreatitis. Alcohol can also raise triglyceride and cholesterol levels, counteracting the effects of fenofibrate. Certain Medications: Inform a doctor about all medications taken, especially blood thinners like warfarin. Fenofibrate can enhance its effects and increase the risk of bleeding.

Is fenofibrate safe for long-term use?

Yes, fenofibrate is often used as a long-term treatment under medical supervision. Regular monitoring of lipid levels, as well as liver and kidney function, is necessary to ensure its continued safety and effectiveness.

What if a dose is missed?

If a dose is missed, take it as soon as remembered. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with the regular schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.

Does fenofibrate cause weight gain?

Weight gain was not reported as a side effect during clinical trials for fenofibrate. If any unusual weight changes are noticed, discuss them with a doctor.
