Omeprazole Gastro-resistant 20mg and Domperidone Sustained Release 30mg Capsules IPOmeprazole Gastro-resistant 20mg and Domperidone Sustained Release 30mg Capsules IPOmeprazole Gastro-resistant 20mg and Domperidone Sustained Release 30mg Capsules IP

Product Description

Omeprazole Gastro-resistant 20 mg and Domperidone Sustained Release 30 mg Capsules IP is a combination of gastrointestinal prokinetic and proton pump inhibitor (PPI) used to treat heartburn, indigestion, epigastric pain, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), peptic ulcers, and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.

GERD involves frequent backflow of stomach acid into the esophagus, causing irritation and symptoms like regurgitation.

Peptic ulcers are erosions in the stomach or duodenal lining, often due to H. pylori or NSAIDs. Zollinger-Ellison syndrome is a rare condition with gastrin-secreting tumors leading to hyperacidity and ulcers.

Omeprazole reduces acid production, while domperidone enhances gastric motility to prevent reflux. It is for short-term relief (≤8 weeks) and not for immediate heartburn (use antacids). Suitable for adults; requires prescription due to cardiac risks with domperidone.

Avoid if you have GI obstruction, cardiac arrhythmias, or hypersensitivity. Baseline ECG and electrolytes are recommended.

Uses

Omeprazole and Domperidone Capsules IP are indicated for:

  • Symptomatic treatment of GERD and erosive esophagitis (healing and maintenance)

  • Management of peptic ulcers (gastric/duodenal) and associated heartburn/indigestion

  • Zollinger-Ellison syndrome (hypersecretory states)

  • Adjunctive therapy for functional dyspepsia (non-ulcer indigestion with bloating/epigastric pain)

Not for children <12 years, acute bleeding ulcers, or long-term use without monitoring. Combine with H. pylori eradication if applicable.

How it works

Omeprazole Gastro-resistant 20 mg and Domperidone Sustained Release 30 mg Capsules combine an acid suppressant and a prokinetic:

  • Omeprazole (20 mg, gastro-resistant): A PPI that irreversibly inhibits the H+/K+ ATPase enzyme (proton pump) in parietal cells, blocking the final step of gastric acid secretion. This reduces basal and stimulated acid output by up to 99%, promoting ulcer healing and alleviating GERD symptoms.

  • Domperidone (30 mg, sustained release): A peripheral dopamine D2 receptor antagonist that does not cross the blood-brain barrier significantly. It enhances gastric peristalsis, accelerates emptying, increases lower esophageal sphincter tone, and coordinates antral-duodenal motility, reducing reflux and nausea.

Together, they provide synergistic relief: omeprazole controls acidity, while domperidone improves motility to prevent acid backflow, addressing both cause and symptoms of upper GI disorders.

Benefits

Omeprazole and Domperidone Capsules offer comprehensive relief from GERD, ulcers, and indigestion by suppressing acid (reducing pain/burning in 70–80% of patients within 4 weeks) and enhancing stomach emptying (alleviating bloating/nausea). This dual action promotes faster healing of esophageal/gastric mucosa, minimizes nighttime reflux, and improves quality of life compared to monotherapy. The sustained-release domperidone provides 12–24 hour coverage, making once-daily dosing convenient, while gastro-resistant omeprazole ensures targeted delivery to the duodenum for optimal efficacy.

How to use

Omeprazole domperidone capsules are used before food. Swallow the medicine as a whole with a glass of water; do not chew or crush it. Typically, it's best to take it before meals, about 15-30 minutes before breakfast, or at bedtime if prescribed twice daily.

Side Effects

Most side effects are mild and resolve with continued use or discontinuation. Common side effects (affecting 1–10% of patients) include:

  • Dry mouth

  • Stomach pain or abdominal discomfort

  • Diarrhea or flatulence

  • Headache

  • Dizziness or drowsiness

Less common but notable side effects:

  • Nausea or constipation (from domperidone)

  • Rash or pruritus

Safety Advice

  • Alcohol: Avoid alcohol, as it stimulates gastric acid production, worsens reflux, and may increase side effects like dizziness or GI upset, reducing treatment efficacy.

  • Pregnancy: Category C for omeprazole (animal studies show no teratogenicity; human data suggest low risk ~1–2% malformation rate); domperidone has limited data (possible QT risk to fetus). Use only if benefits outweigh risks (e.g., severe GERD); consult your doctor for alternatives like lifestyle changes or H2-blockers. Effective contraception is advised if applicable.

  • Breastfeeding: Omeprazole is compatible (minimal milk excretion); domperidone is contraindicated (increases prolactin/milk production but may cause infant cardiac effects or colic). Avoid or pump/discard milk; consult a doctor for safer options like metoclopramide alternatives.

  • Driving/Operating Machinery: May cause dizziness or drowsiness; avoid until effects are known.

Storage Conditions

  • Store at a temperature below 30°C (86°F), in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, heat, and excessive moisture.
